Namely he or she is the main servant of the household. This is the person who manages the household - be it a luxury establishment or a high end residential mansion.


Whilst overseeing the daily operations and administrative duties such as supervising staff, they also may be called upon to plan events, manage budgets and ensure the comfort and security of their employer and guests. They may also be called upon to assist in packing duties, take on the responsibilities of a personal assistant, the serving of meals and drinks, and the running of errands.


Historically the term "Butler" originally referred to a servant in charge of the wine cellar and provisions. Over time, particularly during the Victorian era, the role expanded to include managing the entire household staff.


The modern butler is often a versatile "house manager" or "personal assistant" handling a wide range of duties in a single household or across multiple residences. While the traditional image of a British male servant, the profession is now common in many parts of the world and includes female butlers as well.


Butler, Estate Manager, Majordomo - The specialty of a butler and majordomo is knowledge of a wealthy person's house and all that that mansion contains and this includes all family members as well as pets and any and all visiting peoples to that residence. All the time being well aware of confidentiality issues monitoring any gossip or conversations overheard by staff and keeping a close control on everyone's place in the home.
